Mitä tutkimus kertoo tunteista?

Kokosimme tutkimuksia, jotka auttavat ymmärtämään tunteita – ja kertovat, miksi niiden nimeäminen kannattaa.

Nimeä se, niin se kesyyntyy

Kun koehenkilöt katsoivat tunteikkaita kasvokuvia ja valitsivat niille tunnesanan, aivojen mantelitumakkeen reaktio oli heikompi kuin pelkästään katsellessa. Tutkijat kutsuvat ilmiötä tunteiden nimeämiseksi (affect labeling).

1 · Tunne herää

Mantelitumake hälyttää

2 · Annat sanan

”Tämä on pelkoa.”

3 · Säätely käynnistyy

Otsalohko aktivoituu, hälytys vaimenee

Nimeäminen

Toimii, vaikka emme usko

Ihmiset arvioivat etukäteen, ettei tunteen nimeäminen auttaisi. Silti se vähensi koettua ahdistusta.

Lieberman ym. 2011

Pelko

Sanat altistuksen tukena

Hämähäkkejä pelkäävät, jotka sanoittivat tunteitaan altistuksen aikana, reagoivat viikkoa myöhemmin fysiologisesti vähemmän.

Kircanski, Lieberman & Craske 2012

Tunnesanasto

Tarkka sana, enemmän keinoja

Tunteitaan tarkasti erottelevat säätelevät niitä monipuolisemmin ja turvautuvat stressissä harvemmin haitallisiin keinoihin.

Barrett ym. 2001; Kashdan ym. 2015

Keho

Jokaisella tunteella oma kehokartta

Suomalaistutkimuksen mukaan eri tunteet tuntuvat eri kohdissa kehoa, ja kartat olivat samankaltaisia eri kulttuureissa.

Nummenmaa ym. 2014

Kirjoittaminen

Tunteet paperille

Opiskelijat, jotka kirjoittivat vaikeista kokemuksistaan ja tunteistaan neljänä päivänä, kävivät myöhemmin harvemmin terveyskeskuksessa.

Pennebaker & Beall 1986

Kesto

Vatvominen pidentää tunnetta

Tunteiden kesto vaihtelee paljon. Suru kesti tutkimuksessa pisimpään, ja märehtiminen pidensi tunteita.

Verduyn & Lavrijsen 2015

Säätely

Tukahduttaminen ei kannata

Tunteiden tukahduttaminen on yhteydessä heikompaan hyvinvointiin, tilanteen uudelleenarviointi parempaan.

Gross & John 2003

Etäisyys

Puhu itsellesi nimelläsi

Kun ihmiset puhuivat itselleen omalla nimellään minä-muodon sijaan, stressaava tilanne tuntui vähemmän uhkaavalta.

Kross ym. 2014

Hyvä tietää

Tutkijat eivät ole yksimielisiä

Onko meillä synnynnäiset perustunteet vai rakentuvatko tunteet kokemuksen ja kielen kautta? Käytämme tunnekarttoja apuvälineinä, emme lopullisina totuuksina.
